A house, a home, is for me not a physical space, but mostly a mental space. Home is the feeling that there is space for your feelings. It means being allowed to feel all your emotions fully.

Home is something you return to. You choose to return because it feels like home.

Your home reflects you, a living, growing human being. So your house grows. It lives too. Above all, home is something you have the power to create for yourself.

Home is something you leave. After all, once you’re able to return, you’re able to leave.

Halima wants to show the cycle of creating a home for herself through three steps (1) Awareness, (2) Identity, and (3) Connection. In her work mirrors are placed central to reflect the many meanings and mechanisms between your home and your identity.

(1) Awareness

The moment you gain awareness as a person, your home is given to you.

You’re placed in a home you did not create by yourself. It is created by people you love, people in your life, so these “homes” are part of you.

However, because you are not the one assembling these homes, a defragmentation takes place.

Other people’s view of your home is complete, while yours is so broken,

you can’t even look in the mirror.

(2) Identity

To find out who you are, to be able to look at yourself, you have to look within.

You do the introspective work.

What do i like? What do i hate? What can I change? what should i accept?

This vulnerable process is one that take place when you’re truly alone with yourself.

only then will your true identity be revealed to you.

(3) Connection

WHEN YOU FINALLY TRULY ACCEPT YOURSELF FOR WHO YOU ARE, YOU’RE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE TRUE ACCEPTANCE FROM OTHERS, TOO. AS A RESULT, TRUE CONNECTIONS ARE BORN.

IT IS WHEN BOTH YOU AND THE OTHERS DON’T NEED TO BE AT HOME, TO FEEL AT HOME.

JUST LIKE YOUR SMARTPHONE, LIGHT AND PORTABLE,

YOU CARRY YOUR HOME WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO
